SINGAPORE – Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced that the government will unveil further assistance for Singaporeans with the upcoming Budget announcement in February.
During his visit to Jalan Besar GRC on January 4, PM Wong acknowledged the mounting concerns citizens have regarding the increasing cost of living and assured them that the government is taking proactive measures to address these challenges.
Community Development Council (CDC) Vouchers
On January 3, every Singaporean household received $300 worth of Community Development Council (CDC) vouchers, which PM Wong described as a crucial stepping stone to help families prepare for the upcoming year.
“I hope this will be a good start for you as we move forward,” he stated, underscoring the government’s commitment to providing additional support.
Ongoing Support and Future Aspirations
The Prime Minister emphasized, "We will continue to examine and enhance our schemes and programs to better assist Singaporeans in managing their daily concerns, while also fostering an environment where we can achieve our collective dreams and aspirations."
SG60 Anniversary Preparations
As Singapore gears up for its 60th anniversary or SG60 in 2025, PM Wong reflected on the nation’s journey and the collaborative spirit that has driven its progress.
He asserted that SG60 should not only be a time for celebration but also a moment of reflection on the country’s achievements and future aspirations.
Active Engagement with Communities
Since his inauguration in May 2024, PM Wong has been actively visiting various constituencies, working closely with local communities to identify their needs.
His recent engagement was part of the “SG60 Build with Love” initiative, which targets underprivileged households in Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng.
This project will benefit approximately 1,000 families through the distribution of specially curated gift boxes, aimed at fostering a sense of unity among residents.
Community Symbolism and Engagement Activities
During the event, PM Wong joined locals in constructing the largest Singapore map made from SG60 gift boxes, a symbol of community efforts.
Alongside him were members of the Jalan Besar GRC, who participated in various activities designed to engage the public and promote goodwill.
Content of the Gift Boxes
The gift boxes, packed with essential items such as cushions, blankets, and toiletries, were assembled with love by local volunteers and generous donors.
Children, including five-year-old Timaeus Eliran, contributed by creating personalized cards for the recipients, highlighting the involvement of youth in community-building efforts.
Community Member's Reflection
“It’s heart-warming to witness the younger generation taking part in such initiatives,” said long-time resident Quek Tiong Swee, 77, who documented Singapore’s transformation through his photography.
“This celebration of our 60th anniversary demonstrates that we are committed to progressing forward together.”
Engagement at Chinatown Complex
Following the community engagement event, PM Wong visited the Chinatown Complex where he interacted with surprised diners and participated in a traditional Chinese New Year lohei ceremony, enhancing community ties.
Senior Care Facility Tour
Moreover, PM Wong toured the PCF Sparkle Care @ Kreta Ayer, a senior care facility.
An expansion slated for completion by October will increase its size nearly twofold, significantly enhancing its capacity and amenities, including tailored dementia care services.
Conclusion
Such expansions underscore the government's commitment to supporting an aging population.
This concerted effort by PM Wong and his administration signifies a nurturing approach to governance, focusing on the welfare of citizens and reinforcing the spirit of community as Singapore approaches a pivotal milestone in its history.
Stay tuned for the exciting new initiatives that will further bolster our resilience and unity as a nation!
