Exciting news for shoppers in Singapore! Don Don Donki, the beloved Japanese supermarket chain, is reintroducing plastic bags after a seven-month hiatus. Starting May 19, customers can once again grab these bags—now priced at just five cents each.
But here’s the catch: these aren’t your ordinary plastic bags. The new offerings are biodegradable and eco-friendly, designed to break down naturally over time. This initiative aims to meet customers’ needs while still being kind to the planet. Don Don Donki assures shoppers that sustainability remains a key focus.
In a recent Facebook update, the company reiterated its commitment to environmental responsibility, encouraging patrons to bring their reusable bags whenever they can.
Remember, this reintroduction comes after the supermarket had initially halted plastic bag sales back in October 2024. Before that, shoppers paid 10 cents per bag until July 2023, after which the price was lowered to five cents.
The reaction has been mixed. While many netizens praised the move, some expressed doubts about the real environmental benefits of biodegradable bags.
Supporter Pang Kia Nian shared his enthusiasm, revealing that he reduced his visits to Don Don Donki when plastic bags were no longer available, especially since most of his trips are spontaneous.
Another user, Daniel Sng, suggested that Don Don Donki could take it a step further by offering free bags alongside a discount for customers who bring their own.
Will the return of plastic bags boost foot traffic at Don Don Donki? Only time will tell!
