In a thrilling announcement that promises to ignite innovation in the space sector, Planet has elevated Troy Toman to Chief Product Officer and appointed James Mason as the first-ever Chief Space Officer. Troy Toman's New Role

Troy Toman, a veteran of Planet since its inception in 2014, has played a key role in shaping the company’s software engineering and design capabilities. His leadership has been critical in expanding Planet's computing and storage infrastructure, which now supports an impressive suite of products across a multitude of satellite constellations. As the new Chief Product Officer, Toman will be responsible for steering the growth and strategic direction of Planet’s diverse product lineup, including the industry-renowned Planet Monitoring, Tasking, Analytics, and the innovative Planetary Variables suite, alongside the recently launched Planet Insights Platform.

Toman brings over 30 years of experience in the tech industry, having held significant roles at major companies including Rackspace and Sun Microsystems. He holds a Computer Science degree from Texas A&M University, underscoring a strong foundation in technology leadership.

James Mason's Appointment

Meanwhile, James Mason, a founding member of Planet, has a rich history with the company since its first successful satellite launch in 2013. He has been pivotal in developing and optimizing Planet’s operational capabilities, contributing to the deployment of over 600 satellites. As Chief Space Officer, Mason will take the reins of the Space Systems team, overseeing the entire lifecycle of satellite development, manufacturing, and operations.

Reflecting on his journey, Mason stated, 'From assembling satellites in a garage to launching our Tanager-1 hyperspectral satellite, I've witnessed the incredible transformation of both Planet and the newspace industry. His academic accolades include a Master of Space Studies from the International Space University and extensive studies in Astrophysics and Applied Mathematics.
