Transforming Mental Health Services in Scotland

In a groundbreaking initiative, pharmacists are now embedded within child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) in Scotland, leading to remarkable improvements in patient care and efficiency. Michael Mitchell, the advanced clinical pharmacist at NHS Lanarkshire, shared this exciting news during the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Scotland Conference 2025 in Glasgow.

Wait Times Slashed!

Since pharmacists began managing medication reviews, the average wait time for patients has plummeted to just under 7 weeks—down from a daunting 12 weeks! This strategic move allows the CAMHS team to focus on more complex cases that require psychiatric expertise.

Impressive Results from the Pharmacy Team

From February to April 2025, the pharmacy team successfully managed 394 patients and provided 482 appointments. An astounding 70% of these sessions were dedicated to titrating ADHD medication, one of the most demanding tasks within the CAMHS framework. Confidence in this system is reflected in the impressive attendance rate, soaring to 93%, a marked increase from 74% last year!

A Year of Impact

If this trend continues, Mitchell predicts an additional 2,000 patient appointments annually—appointments that would have been missed without pharmacist involvement. Furthermore, the team has discharged 19 patients, demonstrating effective patient management and flow within the system.

More Than Just Medication

Pharmacists are not just filling prescriptions; they are integral members of the healthcare team. They provide medicines education, tackle shortages, and offer guidance as designated prescribing practitioners. Mitchell emphasizes that these pharmacists are independent prescribers who genuinely connect with and advocate for the wellbeing of young people.

Positive Feedback from Patients and Families

The response from young patients has been overwhelmingly positive, with parents reporting that their children now 'enjoy coming to CAMHS.' This validation signals a significant shift in the approach to mental health care, proving that the integration of pharmacists adds substantial value to the patient experience.

A Brighter Future for Mental Health Care

As more health boards consider this model, the future looks bright for mental health services in Scotland. With pharmacists leading the charge, patients stand to benefit from quicker access to care and an enhanced support system.
