PAR Faces a Tough Defeat in the GE2025 Election

In a stunning turn of events during the recent Singapore General Election held on May 3, the People's Alliance for Reform (PAR) found itself reeling after an overwhelming defeat, losing all 13 of its candidates across six constituencies.

Lim Tean: A Vision for the Future

Addressing the media late Saturday night, PAR's secretary-general Lim Tean expressed his disappointment not only for PAR but for the entire opposition movement. Declining to engage further during the briefing, he emphasized the party's intent to reorganize and return much stronger for the next elections in four to five years. "PAR is a new political entity, just two years old. By the next General Election, all of Singapore will know who we are," he asserted.

Results Breakdown: A Rocky Road for PAR

PAR contested in several challenging constituencies, and the results paint a picture of uphill battles. In the Jalan Besar Group Representation Constituency (GRC), PAR secured only 24.79% of votes against the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) led by Minister Josephine Teo. Similarly, in Tanjong Pagar GRC, they garnered 18.97%, falling short against the incumbent PAP team led by Education Minister Chan Chun Sing.

The situation was no different for PAR’s candidates in the Single Member Constituencies (SMCs), with Lim Tean himself finishing third in Potong Pasir SMC with just 8.35% of the votes, while his competitors from PAP and the Singapore People’s Party led with a whopping 69.18% and 22.47%, respectively.

A Call for Examination: Irregularities Arise

In a contentious twist, Lim Tean raised concerns regarding the integrity of the election process. On social media, he hinted at discrepancies, questioning why certain ballot boxes were reportedly unsealed and opened without signatures, potentially compromising the integrity of the voting process. "Our counting agent attempted to prevent the opening of the boxes, but their concerns were disregarded," he claimed.

Redefining Opposition Participation

Despite the disheartening outcomes, Lim Tean insisted that this election shattered the myth that only three opposition parties deserve a platform. He stated confidently, "The path ahead is open for any party willing to become relevant to Singaporeans' lives." He also warned that the coming years may become increasingly challenging for residents, but expressed unwavering faith that PAR’s policies would resonate with the populace.
