In an ambitious move that signals his unwavering commitment to public service, Labour Chief Ng Chee Meng has officially announced his candidacy for the upcoming general election, stepping forward to represent the People’s Action Party (PAP) in the newly established Jalan Kayu SMC.
"I'm stepping forward in this general election because I want to serve. My public service has always been about people," Mr. Ng passionately stated at a press conference held at the PAP's Teck Ghee branch. He emphasized that despite questions surrounding his return to politics after last election, his motivation remains simple: he never stopped caring.
Over the past several weeks, Mr. Ng has immersed himself in the local community, wandering through the neighborhoods of Jalan Kayu and Fernvale, engaging with residents, and sharing conversations over coffee shop tables. "These interactions have provided invaluable insights into the hopes and concerns of Jalan Kayu residents, revealing their desires for their children and aspirations for a better life," he shared.
Formerly a Cabinet Minister, Mr. Ng made his political debut in the 2015 elections and quickly rose to prominence, becoming the highest-ranking military officer to transition into a Member of Parliament after resigning as Chief of Defence Force in the Singapore Armed Forces.
Though he faced defeat in the 2020 elections, Mr. Ng has continued to make his mark as the Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), where he played a pivotal role during the COVID-19 pandemic, advocating for skills upgrades and supporting job preservation, significantly impacting the lives of many workers.
Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong praised Mr. Ng's dedication, stating, "Chee Meng has shown his mettle and will serve Jalan Kayu residents with equal commitment and dedication." He highlighted that Mr. Ng's leadership during the crisis helped the country emerge stronger.
The newly formed Jalan Kayu SMC, which boasts nearly 30,000 voters, is carved from the high-voter Ang Mo Kio GRC, encompassing thriving private estates, the Seletar Aerospace Park, and several Housing Development Board flats in Fernvale. Following the upcoming election, it will also fall under the Ang Mo Kio Town Council.
However, a competitive battle awaits Mr. Ng; he may face challenges from Red Dot United’s candidate, Ms. Kala Manickam, a former Progress Singapore Party candidate, who is gearing up for a strong campaign in Jalan Kayu. Additionally, other parties, including the People’s Power Party, have expressed interest in contesting the ward, although the People’s Alliance for Reform has since withdrawn.
Stay tuned, as developments in this riveting electoral contest continue to unfold!
