A Major Political Move in Jurong Central

In a bold step ahead of the upcoming General Election, Singapore's ruling People's Action Party (PAP) has announced that Mr. Xie Yao Quan will be their candidate for the newly created Jurong Central single-seat ward. This strategic move highlights the PAP's commitment to maintaining strong representation in the evolving political landscape.

Xie's Political Background and Community Engagement

Mr. Xie, who has been serving as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Jurong Central division since 2020, brings significant experience to his new role. He has also taken the lead as chairman of the Jurong-Clementi Town Council for five years, showcasing his dedication to community service.

At a recent press conference unveiling the candidate slate, Mr. Xie expressed his deep connection to the Jurong community: In these five years, I’ve walked the ground, listened deeply to residents, and put my heart into all that I’ve done to serve them, he stated. Having volunteered locally from 2015 to 2020, Mr. Xie described his candidacy as a homecoming, reaffirming his commitment to the residents.

Rivalry on the Horizon

As Mr. Xie prepares for the election, he is expected to face off against a candidate from Red Dot United, a party that has already indicated its intent to contest the Jurong Central seat. This adds an exciting layer of competition to the election race.

The New Jurong Central Ward

With a sizeable voter base of 29,620, Jurong Central is one of six new Single Member Constituencies (SMCs) established in the latest electoral boundaries review. The reconfiguration aims to maintain a balanced MP-to-voter ratio amidst growing populations in areas like Bukit Batok West and Tengah.

Jurong Central has been formed from parts of the Jurong GRC and Yuhua SMC, while adjacent constituencies are being restructured to promote effective governance.
