A Storied Political Journey Comes to an End

In a heartfelt announcement, Heng Chee How, the long-standing PAP stalwart, revealed he is stepping down from his role as MP for the Jalan Besar GRC after a remarkable 27-year tenure. The 63-year-old, who played a pivotal role in the Whampoa ward, will be succeeded by the capable Shawn Loh, a former director at the Ministry of Finance, during the upcoming general elections.

Heartfelt Tributes and Special Connections

At a recent media conference in Whampoa Park, Mrs. Josephine Teo, the Minister for Digital Development, expressed her deep appreciation for Mr. Heng's dedication, highlighting his compassion for workers, especially seniors. 'Chee How is the elder brother I never had,' she remarked, tearfully acknowledging his honorable character and the affection he garnered from the community.

From Grassroots to National Leadership

Heng Chee How's political career began as a grassroots adviser in Whampoa before he officially entered the political arena in the 1997 General Election. His significant breakthrough came in 2001, leading a PAP team to secure 74.48% of the votes in Jalan Besar GRC. Since then, he has maintained his connection with the ward, consistently working to improve the lives of his constituents.

A Focus on Seniors and Community Development

Throughout his tenure, Mr. Heng has dedicated himself to enhancing infrastructure and services for the aging population of Whampoa, while also advocating for newer developments to attract younger residents. 'There is no greater joy for me than being treated like family by our residents,' he reflected, showcasing the strong bond he built with the community.

Legacy of Labour Advocacy

Before his political career, Heng served as a superintendent in the Singapore Police Force and later as deputy secretary-general of the National Trades Union Congress. His commitment to championing workers’ rights, especially for older employees, has left an indelible mark on Singapore's workforce landscape.

Looking Ahead with Hope

As he prepares to hand over the reins, Mr. Heng expressed his hope that his legacy would continue and that Shawn Loh will bring fresh ideas to the ward. 'We must serve with a pure heart, and when that time comes to pass the baton, let us do so with joy,' he stated.

Farewell to a Beloved Figure

The media conference concluded with an emotional group photograph, capturing the essence of Mr. Heng's lasting impact on those he served. As a respected figure, he will be deeply missed, but his contributions to both the PAP and the residents of Whampoa will not be forgotten.
