In a remarkable and symbolic gesture, Yusof Lateef, the Secretary of the PAP Marine Parade Branch, recently left a People’s Action Party (PAP) flag at the base camp of Mount Everest. This action, captured in a video shared on the official social media channels of the PAP, signifies a unique homage to two notable Singaporean leaders: Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and current Manpower Minister Tan See Leng.

Yusof, who embarked on this daring trek to the world's highest peak for the second time—25 years after his first attempt—described the experience as both physically challenging and spiritually enriching. The expedition in November 2024 required immense perseverance, with climbers facing demanding daily treks of eight to nine hours, and on the longest day, they tackled an exhausting 14 to 16 hour climb! At 55, Yusof acknowledged that the climb was significantly more daunting than in his younger years.

During his journey, Yusof left the PAP flag not only at the Everest base camp but also at a friend's trekking lodge nearby, signifying a heartfelt tribute during the PAP's 70th anniversary celebrations. He regarded this act as a “humble gift” to the party, demonstrating his commitment to public service and the values that the PAP upholds.

In addition to the PAP flag, Yusof carried a special Marine Parade 50th anniversary flag with him, underscoring his deep roots in the community he serves. His dedication is illustrated by his extensive volunteering history; he has been actively involved with the PAP for an impressive 36 years.

This soaring tribute is reminiscent of Yusof's earlier adventure in 1997 when he flew the Young PAP flag atop Mount Kilimanjaro, solidifying his legacy of representing the party in the most challenging terrains.

Preparation for this ambitious trek was no small feat. Yusof dedicated nearly a year to training, engaging in weekly climbs at Bukit Timah and laborious stair workouts to build stamina—testament to his determination and dedication.

Reflecting on his journey, Yusof shared on Facebook: "Mission accomplished. My more than a dozen treks in Nepal. Humbly trekked to Kalapattar and Everest Base Camp. Kalapattar was an anniversary trip my Team and I did 25 years ago. We wanted to relive it. A journey of self-discovery and focus of the mind, body, and spirit!"

As Yusof Lateef's inspirational trek continues to linger in the minds of Singaporeans and party members alike, it serves as a reminder of the commitment to service and community, however high the summit might be.
