SINGAPORE – A significant financial boost is coming to thousands of low-income families in Singapore

as the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) announces a special year-end payout totaling approximately $4.3 million. This initiative is expected to provide noteworthy support to over 6,000 families during this crucial time of year.

In a recent statement from Muis, it was highlighted that this payout is designed to assist families in managing their increased household expenses that often accumulate at year-end. These costs can include unpaid bills, looming loan repayments, and the upcoming school year expenses for families with children. The initiative, first launched in 2012, continues to play a vital role in easing financial burdens.

Enhancement of Reqab Assistance Scheme

Moreover, Muis has also introduced an enhancement to its Reqab assistance scheme, especially benefitting the children of zakat beneficiaries. Previously, financial support for educational needs ranged from $70 to $100 per child, but moving forward, this will now be a standardized amount of $150 per child. This adjustment aims to alleviate financial stress related to school necessities, such as uniforms, books, and other essential supplies.

An impressive sum of $1.28 million has been allocated for this enhancement, which is set to impact around 8,500 children and teenagers aged 18 and below. Eligible zakat beneficiaries can expect to receive notifications about this newly enhanced support via mail in the coming week.

The Role of Zakat

Zakat, a key component of Islamic alms-giving, plays a central role in providing aid to those in need, and this enhanced funding aligns with Muis's broader mission to deliver comprehensive assistance to low-income households.

A Dual Focus on Empowerment

Muis emphasized the dual goal of this initiative, stating, "This initiative reflects a dual focus: addressing immediate financial pressures whilst fostering long-term empowerment.” By prioritizing educational and developmental needs, Muis is laying the groundwork for a more resilient and empowered community.

Community Solidarity During the Holiday Season

As the holiday season approaches, this significant support comes as a breath of fresh air to struggling families, underscoring the importance of community solidarity and shared responsibility in uplifting the vulnerable segments of society.
