In a shocking incident that highlights the need for increased sensitivity among rideshare drivers, a Gojek passenger recently faced verbal abuse from her driver for merely using the car's hand rest. This unsettling experience occurred shortly after she underwent significant spine surgery.

The passenger, identified as Pari, booked a ride on June 17 at around 11:18 AM and immediately encountered the driver’s hostility. Still recovering from her surgery, she needed extra support and temporarily used the car's middle armrest for stability while speaking on the phone.

According to Pari, the driver erupted in anger, hurling insults in Chinese and wrongly accusing her of misusing the seat's cushion. Despite her calm explanation of her medical condition, he continued his tirade, creating an oppressive atmosphere during the entire journey. "His behavior was not only rude but utterly inhumane," she stated.

Pari initially tried to ignore the driver's hostility, focusing on her call with her mother amid the chaos. However, the experience left her feeling vulnerable and angry. Determined to raise awareness, she urged other Gojek passengers to be vigilant and advocated for better training that fosters empathy towards those with medical needs.

In response to her complaint, a Gojek spokesperson assured that all instances of inappropriate behavior are taken seriously. They confirmed that the incident is under review and expressed their commitment to maintaining a respectful environment for all users. Gojek has since issued a refund to Pari for her troubled ride.

On July 11, Pari shared that Gojek informed her the driver was warned, though she lacks concrete proof of this action. They also offered assistance should she choose to file a police report. However, due to her recent emergency surgery, she opted to prioritize her health over pursuing justice for the incident.

"I just want to ensure that no other passenger, especially those with a disability or recovering from surgery, has to endure such treatment in the future," Pari concluded. Her experience has sparked an important conversation about the critical need for understanding and compassion within the ridesharing community.
