In a shocking display that has sparked a wave of outrage online, Malaysian university students were filmed wearing Ku Klux Klan (KKK) robes as part of a class assignment. The controversial video has gone viral, prompting an immediate investigation by local authorities.

The Sepang police chief, Norhizam Bahaman, confirmed that they received a police report regarding the incident late on Tuesday. The costumes, according to Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), were intended to educate students about the historical oppression faced by the Black community in the U.S.

"Preliminary investigations suggest that this reenactment was tied to their coursework on 'Contemporary Global and Legal Issues,' aiming to foster better understanding of racial discrimination and legal responses to it," stated Norhizam.

UiTM defended the students, asserting that the use of such costumes was part of a pedagogical strategy designed to enhance critical thinking and civic awareness among students. They emphasized that the exercise was intended to provide a comprehensive view of historical and global perspectives on race issues.

Despite the university's justification, the display was met with swift backlash on social media. Many users condemned it as ignorant and insensitive, with critics noting that it trivializes the trauma inflicted by the KKK over the years. One Twitter user questioned the educational value of such an approach, stating, "This is trivialising cultural insensitivity and trauma."

The video, which features students parading in KKK robes while carrying crosses, has amassed thousands of views and reposts, igniting calls for accountability from higher education authorities. Some netizens urged action from the Ministry of Higher Education and voiced concerns about the potential spread of radical ideas.

While the incident occurred on the Dengkil campus of UiTM, it has sent shockwaves through the community, as many demand a reevaluation of how sensitive topics are approached in the classroom. Amid growing criticism, the Higher Education Ministry opted not to comment.
