To put that into perspective, that’s an unfathomable 1 quinvigintillion years— that’s a 1 followed by 78 zeros!

Heino Falcke, the lead author and an astrophysics professor at Radboud University, explains, "The final end of the universe is coming much sooner than expected, but fortunately, it still takes a very long time." This new timeline challenges previous beliefs about cosmic longevity and suggests that we should cherish our time in the cosmos.

Dying Stars: The Key to the Universe's Fate

The research delves into the lifecycle of dying stars, particularly white dwarfs, which are the remnants of stars that have exhausted their nuclear fuel. These stars create nebulae and leave behind ultra-hot cores. The study also examines larger stars that end their lives in spectacular supernova explosions, leaving behind black holes.

Utilizing Hawking radiation—named after the legendary physicist Stephen Hawking—the team calculated when white dwarfs would ultimately decay. They predict that in roughly 1 quinvigintillion years, these dim remnants will fade into obscurity as the universe slowly empties of matter.

Not So Far Away in Cosmic Terms

But hold onto your stardust! Before we reach that distant time, the universe will witness a dramatic reduction in stellar brightness. In merely 17 trillion years, most stars will have burned out and transformed into white dwarfs.

The Future of Our Sun

If you're worried about our own solar system, don’t fret just yet. According to NASA, the sun is on its own trajectory. In about 5 billion years, it will expand into a red giant, consuming nearby planets, including Earth. Then, within another billion years, it will collapse into a white dwarf.
