A Gaming Phenomenon Reborn
Omeda Studios has struck gold with their latest release, Predecessor, a multiplayer online battle arena game that took the gaming world by storm when it officially launched in August 2024.
Two Million Players and Counting
Under the leadership of CEO Robbie Singh, Predecessor has rapidly garnered over two million players. However, as the player base expanded, a critical issue emerged that needed addressing: matchmaking delays caused by the geographic separation of servers.
From Failure to Fame: The Journey of Predecessor
Singh's passion for the original game, Paragon, ignited the revival of this beloved title. After Epic Games shut down Paragon in 2018, they opted to open source it. Singh stepped in to revive the game in 2021, and after four years of development and $22 million in funding, Omeda launched Predecessor across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms.
Tackling the Server Challenge Head-On
Singh revealed the challenge: players on the East and West Coasts were experiencing vastly different ping times, hindering competitive play. This issue sparked diverse opinions among the community.
"Our long-term vision was to create a seamless experience for players regardless of their location or device," Singh stated in an interview with GamesBeat. To resolve this, Omeda centralized their servers in Dallas, a city known for its exceptional internet infrastructure.
Dramatic Improvements in Player Experience
Post-implementation, the ping time dramatically decreased from around 100 milliseconds for West Coast players and 80 for those on the East Coast to a swift 40 milliseconds for both. Singh noted, "Players are noticing the difference. The game feels much more responsive, which is crucial in a competitive setting."
Enhancing Connectivity and Community Engagement
The latest update not only boosted game responsiveness but also introduced Discord integration for in-game voice chat. Upcoming features will allow players to invite friends from Discord directly into matches.
Future Expansion Plans
Omeda Studios is eyeing expansion into South America and Asia, eager to foster community growth and localization efforts in these regions. They’re currently gearing up for a community-hosted tournament featuring a whopping $30,000 prize pool—a testament to the game's strong player engagement.
As Singh emphasizes, "As a small company, we must strategically select where to launch new servers. We want to build a supportive community rather than just flip a switch." With plans for more servers in South America, Asia, and the Middle East on the horizon, Omeda Studios is positioning itself for long-term success.
