In a courageous move, TV presenter Nikita Kanda has shared her deeply personal experience with domestic violence, shedding light on an issue that affects countless individuals. The 29-year-old, who gained fame as a contestant on BBC's "Strictly Come Dancing" last year, took to Instagram to reveal the emotional turmoil she has endured.
In her heartfelt post, Nikita urged anyone suffering from similar circumstances to seek help. “It’s something I’ve kept out of the public eye and away from the friends, colleagues, and followers who know me. But I feel a responsibility to use my platform to transform something negative into a catalyst for positive change,” she wrote, highlighting the alarming rise in violence against women and girls across the nation.
Nikita poignantly stated, “We lose 2-3 women each week due to this tragic epidemic. This is unacceptable and must change.” As a presenter for the Asian Network Breakfast since July 2022, she pointed out that her upbringing was marred by violence, both physical and psychological. "Watching my incredible mum suffer through abuse left scars that still linger today,” she shared. “This trauma alters your perspective on the world and clings to you no matter how hard you try to move on.”
Committed to breaking the silence around these topics, Nikita emphasized the need for open dialogue. “In the Asian community, we are often taught to keep quiet and sweep these issues under the rug. It’s time to change that narrative and ensure that every woman, child, and mother is safe,” she declared.
Partnered with professional dancer Gorka Marquez, Nikita was one of the first couples to exit "Strictly" in 2023. Describing her time on the show as a “dream come true,” she also used her platform to highlight the work of the charity Refuge, which offers specialized support for women and children in crisis due to domestic violence.
Her followers have flooded her with messages of support, praising her bravery for sharing such a painful part of her life. “So brave for sharing your story, Nikita! This will inspire so many others to speak up. Sending loads of love,” one commenter wrote.
As more public figures like Nikita Kanda step forward, the hope is that conversations about domestic violence will become more prevalent, ultimately leading to awareness, understanding, and change in communities around the world.
