Ng Chee Meng Declines Government Role

In a surprising twist, Labour chief and Jalan Kayu MP Ng Chee Meng has requested Prime Minister Lawrence Wong not to assign him any governmental role. Emphasizing his dedication, Ng stated, "For the next five years, my priority will be serving my constituents in Jalan Kayu and fulfilling my duties as secretary-general of the NTUC." PM Wong has reportedly agreed to consider this request.

Controversy Surrounds MOE Dialogue and Photos

In a candid statement released on May 6, Ng also addressed criticisms regarding his behavior during a 2017 Ministry of Education (MOE) dialogue, as well as a resurfaced photo with convicted Fujian gang member Su Haijin, known for his involvement in a money laundering scandal.

Reflecting on the MOE incident, Ng expressed regret for any disrespect caused by his remarks, acknowledging the time that has passed since the event. He stated, "I could have handled the situation better. I sincerely apologize and appreciate the feedback, which I will learn from going forward." Ng stressed the importance of teachers and their invaluable contribution to student development.

Dinner with Su Haijin: Clarifications Made

Regarding the controversial dinner with Su Haijin, Ng clarified that the meeting took place quite some time ago and that he has had no further contact with Su following the criminal investigations. "Engaging with various leaders helps me grasp the challenges faced in different sectors," he explained.

This dinner, he asserted, was simply part of his role as labour chief, where it’s common to meet with diverse figures from the industry. Responses came after other ministers faced scrutiny for similar interactions.

Unfolding of a Larger Scandal

The situation intensified when former Reform Party chairman Charles Yeo circulated photos of ministers, including Ong Ye Kung and Chee Hong Tat, also dining with Su. In response, aides affirmed that the ministers had no personal relationship with him, stating these meetings were simply social gatherings.

Local tycoon Sam Goi, who organized the dinner, confirmed that it occurred around 2020, before Singapore's strict COVID-19 measures kicked in. He remarked, "It was a dinner with friends, and I covered the expenses. I haven’t kept in touch with Su since then."

The Aftermath of a Scandalous Arrest

Su Haijin was recently implicated in a $3 billion money laundering case, receiving a 14-month prison sentence in April 2024. This scandal, involving multiple arrests, has cast a shadow over those connected with Su.

Political Landscape Ahead of the Next Election

In the recent 2025 General Election, Ng secured his position by winning 51.47% of the vote against WP newcomer Andre Low. As the PM weighs potential cabinet roles for Ng, who previously held several ministerial posts, the political landscape continues to evolve.

Looking Forward: Ng's Commitment to His Constituents

Despite the swirling controversies, Ng's recent Facebook post highlighted his appreciation for the continued support from residents, union leaders, colleagues, and fans. As he steps away from potential government roles, his clear focus remains on the community he represents.
