Singapore – The Workers' Party (WP) is gearing up for a groundbreaking 2025 General Election, potentially fielding its largest pool of first-time candidates in history. Among the notable names are Dr. Ong Lue Ping, a former senior leader at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), and Mr. Michael Thng, a Harvard-educated entrepreneur.

Dr. Ong, who served as IMH's director of allied health from 2022 to 2024, and Mr. Thng, 37, who has an impressive background as a master's graduate from the prestigious Harvard Kennedy School, have emerged as two “star catches” for WP’s electoral slate.

Sources from The Straits Times suggest that WP is likely to introduce at least 17 new faces to its lineup, surpassing the previous record of 16 newcomers during the elections of 2011 and 2015. This ambitious move follows the party's objective to secure one-third of the seats in Parliament, signaling a more robust challenge to the ruling party.

Currently, WP is expected to deploy at least 30 candidates across eight constituencies, including strongholds such as Aljunied, Sengkang, and the newly contested Tampines GRC. The new candidates are generally older, with an average age of 43, which contrasts with the averages of previous years' newcomers.

Dr. Ong is already actively involved with WP, having been seen volunteering during community meet-ups and attending key events. He was also spotted at WP's headquarters for an official photo session, marking a clear sign of his candidacy. His extensive background includes a pivotal role as a senior principal clinical psychologist and contributions to national education discussions.

Mr. Thng’s candidacy appears promising as he has completed the necessary vetting process. Additionally, his entrepreneurial venture, a product discovery and sampling start-up named Showdrop, showcases his innovative spirit. His academic achievements include an undergraduate degree in economics and international business from New York University, laying a strong foundation for his public policy insights.

Among other emerging candidates are individuals from various professional backgrounds, including lawyers, management consultants, and property managers. The party has already initiated public engagement strategies, with many candidates establishing social media presence and canvassing in their respective constituencies.

One noteworthy applicant is Mr. Abdul Muhaimin Abdul Malik, a senior property manager, who aims to fill a vacant seat in Sengkang GRC, while Mr. Kenneth Tiong, a former quant developer, shifts his focus to Aljunied GRC.

Other key figures include Mr. Harpreet Singh, a senior counsel and legal expert, and Mr. Daniel Lee, a self-employed corporate trainer, both of whom are expected to bring valuable insights to the party.

The WP’s evolving slate aims not just to participate in the election but to significantly influence the national dialogue and represent a wider demographic, promising a diverse and dynamic approach to governance.

As speculation mounts, one thing is clear: GE2025 could see a dramatic shake-up in Singapore's political landscape! Keep an eye on these fresh faces as they aim to reshape the future!
