KYIV, December 23, 2024 — A New Development for Public Health in Ukraine
In a significant development for public health in Ukraine, the Ministry of Health has received eight new refrigerated vans aimed at bolstering the country’s vaccine distribution network for children. This initiative, facilitated by UNICEF in collaboration with the European Union (EU), comes as Ukrainian health facilities face severe challenges due to the ongoing conflict.
State-of-the-Art Refrigerated Vans
These state-of-the-art refrigerated vans are designed to maintain the critical temperatures necessary for vaccine transportation, ensuring that life-saving immunizations remain effective. Each vehicle has the capacity to store approximately 700,000 vaccine doses, significantly enhancing the reach of vaccination programs, particularly in war-affected areas with limited access to healthcare.
Minister of Health Statement
Minister of Health Viktor Liashko emphasized the importance of vaccination amidst the ongoing war, stating, “Despite the challenges posed by full-scale military conflict, we are committed to providing free vaccinations. Our collaboration with international partners has ensured a consistent supply of vaccines throughout the nation. In remote and recently liberated areas, mobile vaccination units are working tirelessly, and we are upgrading our equipment to global standards. The introduction of these refrigerated vans is a crucial step in improving our logistics and maintaining the integrity of vaccine quality during transport.”
Access to Cold Chain Equipment
Thanks to sustained efforts from UNICEF and its partners, around 95% of healthcare facilities in Ukraine now have access to cold chain equipment that meets both European and global requirements. This initiative is vital as the healthcare system continues to cope with the repercussions of war.
Role of the EU and UNICEF
Marianna Franco, head of the EU Humanitarian Aid Office in Ukraine, highlighted the pivotal role of vaccinations in safeguarding public health, particularly in frontline areas. “The EU, along with UNICEF, is dedicated to ensuring that all Ukrainians, especially children, have access to essential vaccines. The introduction of these vans provides hope that more children will be protected against serious diseases,” she stated.
UNICEF's Enhanced Efforts
Earlier this month, UNICEF enhanced its efforts by delivering 700 specialized refrigerators that maintain optimum temperatures for up to 2.5 days without electricity—an essential feature given the frequent power outages due to ongoing attacks on infrastructure.
Significance of Timely Vaccinations
UNICEF Representative Munir Mammadzade stressed the significance of timely vaccinations for children’s health. “These new vehicles and refrigerators not only bolster routine immunization services but also strengthen our humanitarian response, ensuring protection for children both now and in the future.”
Recent Deliveries and Future Plans
In November alone, UNICEF procured and delivered 100,000 diphtheria and tetanus vaccines to offset potential stock shortages. In 2024, UNICEF efforts are set to deliver nearly 1.9 million doses of various vaccines, including polio and COVID-19, to reinforce the healthcare system in Ukraine.
A Message of Resilience
This strategic move in vaccinating children is one of several initiatives aiming to stabilize and restore healthcare services in the region, sending a message of resilience and hope to a nation enduring one of its most challenging times.
