SINGAPORE: Excitement is brewing as the Workers’ Party (WP) has introduced four new potential candidates for Singapore's upcoming General Election on May 3, 2025. The new faces include Dr. Ong Lue Ping, a senior psychologist, Jimmy Tan Khim Teck, Alexis Dang Pei Yuan, and Andre Low Wu Yang.
These candidates were presented to the media on April 18 by party leaders Pritam Singh and Sylvia Lim, following the release of their comprehensive 122-page manifesto.
In response to inquiries about where these candidates would be contesting, Singh remained coy, assuring that details would emerge soon. He also confirmed that there has been no communication with other opposition groups regarding potential multi-cornered contests.
Meet the Candidates
**Dr. Ong Lue Ping** (48) is a senior principal clinical psychologist at the Institute of Mental Health, specializing in child and adolescent care. A dedicated volunteer with WP since November 2023, he has engaged actively in community initiatives, emphasizing that his move into politics stems from a desire to serve Singapore in a new capacity.
Reflecting on his career shift, Dr. Ong remarked, "It's a very intentional choice for me to step down from my leadership role to avoid any potential conflicts of interest. It's a transition I have no regrets about."
**Jimmy Tan Khim Teck** (53) comes from the engineering sector as co-founder of Immanuel Engineering. A resident of Tampines, he has been involved with the WP since 2020 and recently took on the role of legislative assistant to Pritam Singh, engaging in grassroots activities while fostering community relations.
**Alexis Dang Pei Yuan** (39) is a media business development executive with Teads. With a wealth of experience in finance and technology, she joins WP after contributing to local house visits and community events since 2020. Dang believes it is crucial for Singapore’s parliament to reflect a broader diversity of voices.
**Andre Low Wu Yang** (34) has a dynamic background in law and technology, having worked with reputable firms and startups. He has been integral to WP's media strategy and digital engagement. Low expressed his commitment to amplifying the voices of everyday Singaporeans, recognizing the importance of diverse perspectives in difficult times.
The WP also hinted at changes ahead as they prepare to compete for more parliamentary seats than in previous elections. Their strategic approach to renewal and succession planning reflects a commitment to remain relevant and responsive to citizens' needs.
Looking Ahead: The Road to GE2025
As Singaporeans prepare to head to the polls, the landscape of opposition politics is shifting. With the ruling People's Action Party announcing changes within their ranks, the WP is eager to seize the moment with these new candidates. With nominations set for April 23 and the election just around the corner, all eyes will be on how these newcomers will shape the discourse moving forward.
The anticipation builds as each party strategizes for a formidable battle in the upcoming election—an opportunity for citizens to influence Singapore’s future.
