Breaking News: New Era for Singapore’s Intellectual Property Office as Tan Kong Hwee Takes the Helm!
SINGAPORE – Exciting leadership changes are underway at the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (Ipos) as Mr. Tan Kong Hwee is set to step in as chief executive starting March 1, succeeding Mrs. Rena Lee, who held the position since August 2020. Tan will first be appointed as chief executive (designate) on February 10, according to a recent announcement from the Ministry of Law (MinLaw).
Tan Kong Hwee is no stranger to leadership roles. He is currently an executive vice-president at the Economic Development Board (EDB), where he oversees the global enterprises and marketing group. With over two decades of experience in the public sector, Tan has built an impressive track record. He began his career in 2002 with the Ministry of Home Affairs, before moving to EDB's infocomms and media division in 2006, which included assignments in Japan and Europe.
During his tenure at EDB, Tan has been instrumental in forging partnerships with top companies both locally and internationally. Under his guidance, the EDB has successfully pursued various investment projects aimed at economic growth across multiple sectors. His transition into the role of Ipos chief executive is anticipated to carry forward this momentum, bringing fresh perspectives to intellectual property initiatives.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Lee is not stepping away quietly. After an impactful term at Ipos, including spearheading the Singapore IP Strategy 2030, she will assume a pivotal role as Singapore’s ambassador for international law with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Her leadership at Ipos significantly elevated Singapore’s reputation as a global hub for intellectual property and intangible assets. She played a vital role in legislative reforms and international negotiations that strengthened Singapore’s position in the global IP ecosystem. Notably, under her guidance, Singapore achieved its highest-ever ranking in the Global Innovation Index, placing fourth globally.
Dr. Stanley Lai, the chairman of the Ipos board of directors, expressed gratitude for Mrs. Lee’s extensive contributions and wished her success in her future endeavors, which may include a candidacy for the International Court of Justice bench.
Permanent Secretary for Law Luke Goh also commended Mrs. Lee for her crucial role in enhancing Singapore's innovation landscape. With her departure marking the end of an era, both MinLaw officials and Dr. Lai shared their anticipation of working with the incoming chief executive, Mr. Tan, as they aim to elevate Singapore’s intellectual property framework to new heights.
As Singapore aims to thrive in the global market amidst rapidly evolving intellectual property landscapes, the leadership lineup at Ipos promises strategic developments and new opportunities for innovation. Stay tuned for more updates on how this transition will shape Singapore’s future in the realm of intellectual property!
