SINGAPORE – As the political landscape heats up in preparation for the upcoming General Election, two promising new candidates have been unveiled for Sembawang Group Representation Constituency (GRC) by Health Minister Ong Ye Kung.
On March 29, Gabriel Lam, the Chief Operating Officer of Shalom International Movers, and Ng Shi Xuan, the Director of Powermark Battery and Hardware, were introduced as potential representatives.
During a community outreach event at the Bukit Canberra integrated sports and community hub, 35-year-old Ng expressed his enthusiasm for the role, emphasizing his desire to bring innovative ideas to the area and engage with the residents.
With ten years of grassroots volunteer experience in MacPherson and a background in public service, Ng is ready to dive into the community and make a difference.
Mr. Lam, 42, although not currently a Sembawang resident, has deep roots in the area, with his family having moved there in 1989.
He stated, “I want to leverage Minister Ong’s expertise to enhance the lives of our residents. There’s much for me to learn, and my goal is to uplift the community.”
The nomination of these two figures marks a strategic move by the People’s Action Party (PAP) as they aim to refresh their candidate lineup regularly.
Minister Ong, the anchor minister for Sembawang GRC, praised Lam and Ng as “dynamic and enterprising,” and a strong addition to the volunteer force committed to community service.
Sembawang GRC is currently represented by a team comprising Mr. Ong, Ms. Poh Li San, Mr. Vikram Nair, Ms. Mariam Jaafar, and Dr. Lim Wee Kiak.
Changes are ahead as Sembawang West will transition to a single-member constituency in the upcoming elections, which are expected to be held by mid-year.
Political tensions are palpable as opposition parties, including the National Solidarity Party (NSP) and the Singapore Democratic Party, are vying for a stronger presence in the GRC, with both parties already claiming interest in Sembawang West.
The PAP secured 67.29% of the votes in the 2020 General Election, outpacing the NSP, which garnered 32.71%.
With more than $2 million pledged by OCBC Bank for a new initiative aimed at supporting over 180,000 seniors, Mr. Ong, Mr. Lam, and Mr. Ng’s engagement with such programs underscores their commitment to community welfare as they prepare for the electoral battle ahead.
With fresh faces and renewed energy, the campaign in Sembawang GRC promises to be a riveting contest as voters gear up for an election that could reshape their representation.
Stay tuned for updates on this dynamic race!
