James Webb Space Telescope’s Groundbreaking Discovery
In just a short period since its launch, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has rapidly amassed an impressive list of achievements. Recently, it marked a significant milestone by directly imaging a planet orbiting a star beyond our solar system for the first time. The planet, named TWA 7b, orbits the star TWA 7, located about 111 light-years away in the Antlia constellation. This Saturn-like planet is approximately 50 times farther from its star than Earth is from the Sun and weighs about one-third the mass of Saturn.
JWST utilized its MIRI instrument with a coronagraph to block out the star's intense light, enabling astronomers to study the surrounding dust. This innovative approach revealed a faint infrared signal indicative of a planet clearing a pathway through the debris, suggesting it may still be developing from the disk of material surrounding its star. Importantly, TWA 7's orbital plane is oriented nearly perpendicular to ours, presenting a unique opportunity to discover new exoplanets that traditional dimming methods wouldn't catch.
NASA's DART Mission: A New Approach to Planetary Protection
In a world where planetary defense is crucial, NASA's DART mission has garnered attention for its innovative strategy. This mission successfully collided with a piece of space debris named Dimorphos in 2022, effectively turning one large asteroid into many smaller pieces. Italian cubesat LICIAcube, which was aboard DART, captured crucial footage of the ejected boulders ranging from 0.2 to 3.6 meters in diameter, flung away from the impact site at speeds up to 52 meters per second.
Surprisingly, rather than dispersing randomly, these boulders clustered in two distinct groups, revealing complexities in planetary defense techniques that could redefine our approach. With the continued threat of asteroids on collision courses with Earth, understanding this dynamic could enhance our strategies for mitigating potential impacts.
