NASA and Peru Forge Groundbreaking Partnership for Sounding Rocket Research!

In a historic move, NASA and Peru’s National Commission for Aerospace Research and Development (CONIDA) have officially laid the foundation for an exciting multi-year sounding rocket launch campaign in Peru. This initiative promises to open up new avenues for scientific exploration in the heart of South America.

The two entities signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding that outlines plans for safety training, a comprehensive feasibility study, and significant technical support from NASA to assist CONIDA with sounding rocket launches. Sounding rockets, which are small, cost-effective vehicles, offer invaluable suborbital access to space, making them vital for experimental research.

“We are eager to explore the potential of launching sounding rockets from Peru once again,” declared NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “This agreement enhances our international cooperation with Peru and amplifies the scientific research possibilities due to the country's prime location along the magnetic equator. Together, we can explore new frontiers!”

The signing took place during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Lima, attended by notable figures including Maj. Gen. Roberto Melgar Sheen, head of CONIDA, and Brian Nichols, Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs for the US State Department. Their collaborative spirit underlines the importance of global partnerships in advancing space exploration.

Moreover, during his visit, Nelson highlighted the significance of international cooperation in space efforts and praised Peru’s commitment to scientific advancement with its recent endorsement of the Artemis Accords, which sets a framework for safe and responsible space exploration.

The collaboration between the United States and Peru is not new; it reflects a decades-long tradition of partnership, with NASA previously conducting sounding rocket campaigns at CONIDA’s Punta Lobos launch site in 1975 and 1983.
