In an astonishing spectacle, a sprawling streak of white light reminiscent of an aurora illuminated the night sky over several U.S. states after a Chinese rocket successfully deployed satellites into orbit. Experts reveal that this stunning display unfolded when the rocket released a groundbreaking type of fuel before reentering the atmosphere.

The Light Show Sighted Across Seven States

Around 1:24 a.m. ET on Saturday (May 17), the luminous phenomenon dazzled onlookers for approximately 10 minutes, bridging across Colorado, Idaho, Utah, Missouri, Nebraska, Washington, and New Mexico. Spaceweather.com suggests that the light show may have been visible even further afield.

Interestingly, the dazzling streak coincided with an aurora caused by a G2-class geomagnetic storm earlier that night, triggered by a coronal mass ejection from the sun. Many spectators initially mistook the white streak for STEVE, an aurora-like phenomenon characterized by vibrant ribbons of light.

Revealing the Source of the Light

The dazzling display was ultimately attributed to China’s Zhuque-2E rocket, which launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center around 12:12 a.m. ET, releasing six satellites equipped with various scientific instruments. Before burning up upon reentry, the rocket ejected fuel, leading to the stunning light show.

What Caused the Streak?

Confusion initially surrounded the cause of the brilliant streak. Some speculated it was a de-orbit burn or a result of the rocket's second stage igniting. However, astronomer Jonathan McDowell clarified that the phenomenon arose from a "fuel dump" occurring at an altitude of around 155 miles (250 kilometers), where the expelled fuel froze into tiny crystals, creating a reflective ribbon in the night sky.

The Zhuque-2E rocket represents a significant leap in space technology, being a single-use orbital vehicle developed by Chinese firm LandSpace. Standing tall at about 160 feet (50 meters), it can launch payloads of up to 13,200 pounds (6,000 kilograms) into low-Earth orbit, utilizing a novel hybrid fuel of liquid oxygen and methane, known as "methalox."
