Revolutionizing Weather Forecasting from Space
Launching from an orbit 36,000 kilometers above Earth, the Meteosat Third Generation Sounder satellite (MTG-S1) is poised to transform severe weather forecasting as we know it. Unlike traditional imaging satellites, the MTG-S1 employs its cutting-edge Infrared Sounder to gather critical data on temperature, humidity, and trace gases, creating detailed three-dimensional atmospheric maps.
This groundbreaking data will revolutionize our ability to detect and anticipate quickly changing and potentially hazardous weather patterns, enabling more reliable storm warnings and allowing communities to prepare for storms. It will also provide vital information for pilots, enhancing their safety by alerting them to areas of invisible turbulence, and play a significant role in climate risk mitigation—ultimately saving lives and reducing property damage.
"This mission will transform forecasting by utilizing innovative space technologies to deliver three-dimensional atmospheric data, leading to quicker responses to extreme weather events," stated Simonetta Cheli, ESA's Director of Earth Observation Programs, acknowledging the dedication of teams across ESA and its European partners who made this mission possible.
