PUTRAJAYA: The patient diagnosed with monkeypox, specifically the clade II variant known as mpox, is showing significant improvement and is currently in a stable condition, announced Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.
The individual, who was confirmed to have contracted mpox on September 16, has made positive strides in their recovery. "The patient, who is still in isolation, is stable and healthy. We plan to conclude the isolation period soon and will inform the public when this occurs," he stated during the "Gotong Royong Mega Fight Aedes 2.0, 1 Hour Malaysia Clean Up" initiative, which took place in conjunction with Malaysia Clean Up Day.
On September 17, Health Director-General Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan had reported that the Ministry of Health confirmed one positive mpox case out of 58 suspected cases examined this year. Thankfully, Dr Dzulkefly confirmed that no new cases have emerged, urging the community to maintain adherence to preventive health measures. "At this point, we have only one confirmed case. I can confidently say that mpox is under control," he remarked.
In terms of vaccination efforts, Dr Dzulkefly indicated that the Health Ministry is finalizing the details for the MVA-BN vaccine and is currently awaiting its delivery. "We are committed to transparency regarding this matter; the key point is that the vaccine arrangement is finalized and we are awaiting the supply," he assured.
In a prior announcement on September 2, it was noted that Malaysia would soon receive the Tecovirimat (TPOXX) antiviral treatment along with the MVA-BN vaccine through the ‘COVID-19 ASEAN Response Fund’. This vaccine is targeted specifically at high-risk groups, including health care workers and individuals who have had close contact with confirmed mpox cases, and will only be administered following a thorough medical evaluation.
As the world continues to navigate various health challenges, the ongoing response to mpox in Malaysia showcases not only effective public health measures but also the importance of community awareness and cooperation in controlling potential outbreaks. Stay tuned for further updates on the patient's condition and the impending vaccine rollout.
