Mobile Scanning Scheme Expands Rapidly

In a groundbreaking initiative, the number of liver scanning trucks deployed across communities has surged, nearly doubling within just two years. Thanks to NHS England, the program now boasts 20 scanning teams, up from only 11 at the outset of the pilot.

A Surge in Early Detection

Since the launch, over 112,000 individuals have undergone fibroscan tests for liver health, with a staggering 8,470 referred for additional medical testing. This proactive approach aims to tackle the alarming rate of liver cancer in the UK, where approximately 6,600 new cases emerge each year—often without noticeable symptoms.

Reaching the At-Risk Population

This innovative NHS program specifically targets high-risk groups, including heavy drinkers and those with a history of viral hepatitis or non-alcoholic liver disease. The mobile scanning units are strategically stationed in various community hubs such as GP practices, food banks, diabetes and sexual health clinics, as well as homeless shelters, ensuring accessibility for those who need it most.

Community Impact and Health Strategy

Additionally, some trucks are deployed at popular public events, including football matches and supermarkets, further broadening their reach. Professor Peter Johnson, NHS's national cancer director, emphasizes the importance of early detection, stating, “By making screenings accessible, we can identify cancers at stages where treatment success rates are significantly higher—ultimately saving lives.”

A Collaborative Effort for Healthier Lives

Pamela Healy, chief executive of the British Liver Trust, expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration with NHS England, noting the program’s success in helping thousands access essential care for their liver health. She warns, “Liver cancer often goes undetected until it's too late. With pre-existing cirrhosis being a major risk factor, early detection is crucial. We must continue these checks to help even more at-risk individuals.”
