A newborn named Cole Jordan Groth is bravely battling for his life after a routine circumcision almost cost him everything at a leading medical center in New York City. His family reports that he suffered from severe bleeding for over seven hours, leading to multiple organ failures.
Nearly two weeks after the traumatic incident, little Cole remains hospitalized. His father, Tim Groth, shared that while Cole is showing signs of improvement, he is "definitely not out of the woods by any means." Medical professionals expect him to stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for at least a couple of months as he copes with complications related to his intestines.
"Each day brings a glimmer of hope, but we are prepared for the possibility of setbacks at any moment," Tim remarked. He stressed the need for what the surgeon humorously referred to as "boring days" in the future.
A Troubling Decision Turns Critical
Cole was born on March 31, with pre-existing cardiac issues that had required a stent to be placed in his heart shortly after birth. He was recovering well in the NICU, and just two days before he was scheduled to go home, medical staff presented the option of circumcision to his parents. Tim and Gabrielle Groth did not realize the significant risks this procedure would pose, especially for a baby already suffering from congenital heart disease.
Initially, all seemed well in the hours following the circumcision. However, by 2:30 a.m., a shocking situation unfolded: Cole’s diaper was soaked with blood, leading to a horrifying realization that he was in serious trouble.
Desperate Measures Becomes a Dire Situation
Despite immediate attention and attempts to rewrap the injury, Cole’s condition drastically deteriorated. By 9 a.m., doctors were forced to intervene with an urgent blood transfusion, as the infant lost nearly half of his blood volume—a staggering amount for a baby of his age.
This grave situation prompted a series of seizures and critical damage to his kidneys, liver, and brain. After three days of seeming recovery, a shocking call from the hospital alerted his parents that parts of Cole’s intestines had died and needed swift surgical removal.
A Long Road to Recovery Ahead
Rushed to the operating room, doctors performed multiple surgeries to save the tiny infant. Several segments of his intestines were removed, and while he was stabilized, the family is still on edge.
Awaiting updates in the NICU, Tim expressed the profound emotional and physical toll this experience has taken on their family. In his GoFundMe campaign, he articulated, "Words can only touch the surface of the pain Cole, my wife, our family, and I are experiencing right now."
As the family continues to hope for Cole’s recovery, a spokesperson for New York-Presbyterian has declined to comment due to patient privacy policies, leaving the community and family longing for answers and healing.
