Celebration Details
In a historic moment, fireworks illuminated the Singaporean sky at midnight as migrant workers welcomed 2025, marking the largest ever New Year’s Eve celebrations at Kranji Recreation Centre. This spectacular event was a highlight for over 10,000 migrant workers who gathered from various dormitories to usher in the new year together.
Extended Festivities
For the very first time, the festivities were extended until midnight at six recreation centres across Singapore, an initiative organized by the Ministry of Manpower's Assurance, Care and Engagement Group. This group was established in response to the needs of migrant workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and has been instrumental in promoting their well-being and sense of community.
A Night Filled with Joy
Unlike previous years, which lacked the excitement of fireworks and midnight celebrations, this year’s event was filled with joy and laughter. Attendees like Mr. Rahman Luthfar, a dedicated piling and demolition worker from Bangladesh, were ecstatic to experience the fireworks after last witnessing them at the Marina Bay countdown in 2011. “Now very good, I can see fireworks here,” he exclaimed.
Star Performances
The night also featured performances from popular Bangladeshi singer Monir Khan and Tamil artists Arulpragasam and Soundarya, making the night even more special for attendees who hold these entertainers in high regard. Mr. Luthfar, who fondly recalled listening to Khan’s tapes during his youth, expressed his excitement, stating, “I planned to take a photo with him!”
Carnival Activities
Migrant workers participated wholeheartedly in various carnival activities such as archery and futsal, while enjoying delicious free treats like briyani and ice cream. The atmosphere was vibrant as laughter filled the air, with participants getting airbrushed tattoos and caricatures. Mr. Nirjon Dewan, who was in line for his caricature, reflected on his transformation from life in his quiet village in Bangladesh to enjoying the bustling celebrations in Singapore. “I have many friends. I’m very happy here,” he said.
Reflections and Aspirations
As the night drew to a close and the countdown began, emotions ran high. Many workers took time to reflect on their dreams for the new year. Mr. Luthfar shared his aspirations to buy a gold necklace for his daughter during his home visit in February, while Mr. Rajamama Santhoshkumar expressed a heartfelt wish for the safety and well-being of his family in India.
A Spearhead of Community and Hope
This momentous celebration not only fostered camaraderie among migrant workers but also reinforced the importance of community, hope, and friendship. With such a spectacular start to 2025, these resilient individuals are determined to pursue their dreams and make the most of the opportunities in Singapore!
