Microsoft’s New Year Blunder: Scanners Still Malfunctioning After Windows 11 Update!
As the tech world kicks off the new year, a troubling issue has emerged for users of multifunction devices on Windows 11. Despite Microsoft’s recent updates, problems with the eSCL scan protocol persist, leaving many frustrated.
A recent report from a user highlighted ongoing challenges with the Canon ImageClass MF269dw—a multifunction printer that promises seamless printing, copying, scanning, and faxing capabilities. The user described a frustrating scenario: 'It works flawlessly on a Windows 10 machine, but on Windows 11, it only functions properly when both devices are connected via wired Ethernet.'
According to this user, a Canon technician remarked that the scanner's performance seems 'erratic,' working intermittently for various users in different configurations. This inconsistency raises concerns among Canon owners about the stability of their devices following the Windows update.
Back in November, Microsoft placed a compatibility safeguard on USB-connected devices using the eSCL protocol after reports of glitches in device discovery surfaced. In December, the company claimed to have resolved these issues. However, it appears that the update provided through KB5048667 has not fully addressed these challenges for Canon device users. In fact, Canon support remains adamant that problems with the eSCL protocol in version 24H2 of Windows 11 are ongoing.
In response to inquiries about this issue, Microsoft acknowledged they were investigating but have provided no additional comments since December 20. Meanwhile, Canon has offered more transparency, acknowledging known problems impacting their ScanGear MF drivers—essential software that enables advanced scanning settings. While Canon is reportedly keeping in contact with Microsoft to rectify these issues, they have not committed to a specific timeline for a fix. According to their spokesperson, they anticipate a resolution plan from Microsoft in January 2025.
This ongoing saga adds to a growing list of frustrations surrounding the Windows 11 24H2 update. Users have also reported other bizarre glitches. For instance, many have experienced issues with the Suggested Actions feature, which seems to suggest more headaches than solutions.
Despite the adversity, there is a silver lining: the nostalgic Windows Fax and Scan app remains part of Windows 11, albeit not in the ARM version. For those grappling with scanning challenges, this retro solution may serve as a workaround until a permanent fix is deployed.
In summary, if you're among the many users facing scanner malfunctions post-Windows 11 update, you may need to resort to alternatives for the time being. As we await a potential resolution from Microsoft and Canon, patience is key—but that doesn't mean the frustration will be forgotten easily!
