Launched globally, Apple's Swift Student Challenge opens its doors to students as young as 13. It encourages budding developers to harness their creativity and coding skills using Swift—Apple’s programming language—to design app playgrounds targeting real-life problems.

"This initiative empowers individuals from all walks of life to showcase their passion and innovation in a meaningful way," says Susan Prescott, Apple's VP of developer relations.

From Thousands to a Select Few

Out of countless applicants, only 350 students earn the title of winners, gaining a remarkable one-year membership to the Apple Developer Program along with AirPods Max. From these champions, 50 exceptional creators, like Conor Ebeling and Tamera Middlebrooks, are invited to Cupertino for the prestigious WWDC!

Innovative Solutions for Real Problems

Conor Ebeling, a self-taught coder since sixth grade, finally applied for the challenge as a sophomore at Purdue University, driven by his desire to help others. His app, Herald, empowers non-verbal individuals to control a keyboard using facial expressions and eye movements.

Inspired by a memorable interview with Stephen Hawking, Ebeling is determined to replicate that groundbreaking communication experience on Apple devices using advanced language models.

Addressing Personal Struggles with Technology

Meanwhile, Tamera Middlebrooks, a student at Apple's Detroit Developer Academy, developed SwayApp to assist those with balance disorders, inspired by her battle with vestibular migraines. It’s more than just an app; it's a beacon of hope and community for individuals facing similar challenges.

"I wanted to show them they’re not alone and that help exists," Middlebrooks shared, highlighting the importance of shared experiences.
