Are you a fan of vibrant bazaars bursting with food, fashion, and live entertainment? If so, chances are you've experienced the magic of a Mak Besar event!
Launched in 2019, the events marketing company has already made waves, hosting over 15 large-scale consumer gatherings. Each event boasts between 100 and 200 vendors and attracts an impressive 65,000 visitors on average.
Whether at the iconic Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre or in community spaces like Tampines and Lakeside, Mak Besar has transformed the bazaar landscape in Singapore.
The Heart Behind the Business: Haryani Othman
Haryani Othman, the founder and managing director, is not just a name; she's a community pillar. The 46-year-old entrepreneur has donned many hats—legal executive, television producer, comedian—but at her core, she remains a passionate community member.
"I love seeing others happy," Haryani shared with CNA Women. "Mak Besar allows me to create joyful spaces for everyone to enjoy."
From Screen to Scene: Haryani's Colorful Journey
After graduating with a communications degree in 2003, Haryani found herself immersed in Singapore's entertainment realm. She began her journey in 2006 on Suria, where she quickly became a familiar face in Malay-language television.
Writing and producing over 20 television shows, she collaborated with local talents, earning accolades for her work. Yet, despite her successful media career, Haryani’s heart was led to something more fulfilling.
Events That Empower: The Birth of Mak Besar
By 2017, Haryani was balancing legal work and freelance events management. A disagreement with an events company led her to reconsider her path.
Feeling the weight of both passion and responsibility, she sought encouragement from friends and family who believed in her vision. Inspired, she decided to launch her own events company.
In 2018, alongside partners Firdaus and Lina, the seeds of Mak Besar were sown. The name, which translates to 'big aunt' in Malay, reflects Haryani's nurturing spirit and dedication to her community.
The first gathering, Grand Bite at Grandstand, was a resounding success, cementing Haryani's commitment to creating opportunities for vendors and engaging experiences for the public.
Adapting to Challenges: Resilience Amidst a Pandemic
As the pandemic struck in 2020, Haryani faced a daunting reality. With traditional bazaars canceled, she innovated by launching an online platform, Mak Besar Garage, where vendors could showcase their products through live streams.
This initiative not only supported vendors but also entertained a massive online audience, showcasing local talent and keeping businesses afloat.
An Expanding Vision: The Future of Mak Besar
Fast forward six years, and Haryani now leads a full-fledged team of 30, including 10 permanent staff and 20 part-time workers. Mak Besar has evolved but remains rooted in community support.
This year alone, they've hosted the Grand Market at Suntec and the Ramadan Bazaar at Our Tampines Hub, with upcoming events already in the pipeline.
Each bazaar is uniquely themed, with plans for a family-focused FUNWORLD event later this year. Haryani emphasizes the importance of remaining in tune with the community's desires.
"Mak Besar is not just another bazaar; it’s a living, breathing embodiment of what the community craves at any moment," she stated. Prepare to be amazed—Mak Besar promises to keep evolving and delighting Singaporeans for years to come!
