Imagine a world where you can wave goodbye to the endless cycle of picking up after yourself. At CES 2025, this dream edged closer to reality with the unveiling of Roborock's remarkable Saros Z70, a breakthrough robot vacuum equipped with a mechanical arm that can pick up socks and other debris right off the floor.
This revolutionary device marks a new era in mechanical cleaning. Capable of identifying and picking up items like clothes and small towels, the Saros Z70 isn't just any ordinary robovac—it's the first mass-produced model with such advanced capabilities. During its demonstration at CES, we witnessed the Saros Z70 in action, tirelessly picking up socks with a mechanical precision that reminded many of childhood claw machines.
Equipped with a five-axis arm named OmniGrip, the robot can handle objects weighing up to 300 grams (approximately 10.5 ounces). While it may struggle at times to grab items on the first attempt, its capacity for improvement during regular use is promising, indicating future iterations might be able to pick up a wider range of objects.
Although the Saros Z70 isn't available for purchase just yet, Roborock anticipates it will hit shelves in the first half of the year. While the exact price has yet to be confirmed, high-end robot vacuums typically start around $1,500 or more, so expect a premium price tag.
A Closer Look at the Demo Experience
The robot's unveiling wasn't without its hiccups. During its debut in New York City's Soho House, initial attempts were met with a malfunction that left the vacuum hesitant to exit its docking station. However, once onstage, it demonstrated its impressive skills, methodically picking up socks and depositing them into designated areas as directed through a mobile app.
The Saros Z70 boasts the ability to detect up to 108 different obstacles within its environment, and while its current list of manipulable items is limited, Roborock plans to enhance its software, opening the door for the vacuum to handle even more objects in future updates.
A Robot That Learns
As we spent time with the Saros Z70, it followed a unique routine during the demonstration, which confined its navigation to a pre-set path, eventually picking up and collecting socks. Nevertheless, the vacuum did occasionally show problem-solving skills, navigating around obstacles and adjusting its approach to successfully grab items it needed to clean.
Apart from socks, the robot showed potential when handling a wool beanie hat without hesitation, proving its ability to recognize various objects. Although not every attempt resulted in success—sometimes dropping items or veering off course—the Saros Z70’s learning curve suggests that future models will become increasingly adept at maneuvering through diverse cleaning tasks.
Safety Features and Pet-Friendly Functionality
Safety remains a priority with the Saros Z70, which is equipped with child locks and emergency shut-off buttons to prevent any accidental grabs of pets or small children. The robot also includes features designed for pet owners, such as live feeds for monitoring furry friends while the vacuum is in operation.
Advanced Technology Behind the Magic
At the core of the Saros Z70's performance lies Roborock's cutting-edge StarSight navigation and object recognition system. Upgraded from traditional lidar technology, this system combines dual-light 3D sensors and RGB cameras powered by AI, enabling the robot to navigate and recognize items in its surroundings effectively.
Beyond the Arm: Features That Impress
Beyond its game-changing arm, the Saros Z70 does not skimp on traditional vac features. Delivering a staggering 22,000 Pa of suction power and a dual anti-tangle system designed to prevent hair from wrapping around its components, this robovac also includes dual-spinning mops for superior cleaning performance—lifting 2.2 centimeters to enhance air circulation and prevent dirt from smearing across floors.
With its eye-catching design and remarkable capabilities, the Roborock Saros Z70 sets a high standard in the robotic cleaning market. As 2025 unfolds, excitement builds for its release and the potential it holds for alleviating the daily chore of tidying up.
