A Unique Rescue Story

At Dekalb Humane Society (DHS), compassion knows no bounds, especially for animals in desperate need. Recently, they've welcomed an extraordinary tiny furball who stands out in all the right—and wrong—ways.

Introducing Sewer Rat!

Meet the charmingly scruffy Sewer Rat, a kitten whose unusual appearance has everyone at DHS swooning. "He’s a kitten. Allegedly," the organization humorously noted on Facebook. "He currently looks like he crawled out of a haunted crawlspace!"

From Abandonment to Hope

When DHS first encountered Sewer Rat, he wasn't just a funny-looking creature; he was a little lost soul. "He was found alone as a stray, an orphaned kitten in the middle of a trailer park," shared Teresa Feightner, DHS's director. "He was in rough shape and needed immediate help."

Battling Health Challenges

Upon his arrival, the staff quickly learned that this little guy was facing significant health issues. "He came in with one of the worst cases of ringworm we’ve seen in a while—a severe, contagious fungal infection affecting his skin and fur," Feightner explained. Despite his discomfort, Sewer Rat's spirit remained unbroken.

Sweetness in Adversity

This approximately 7-week-old fur baby, despite being covered in ringworm, exhibited a heartwarming personality. "He’s a little angel," said Feightner. "His foster reports that he loves to curl up on your chest for naps and is surprisingly sweet despite his challenges. He’s gentle, resilient, and oddly charming. Everyone here is smitten with him!"

A Search for a Loving Home

Sewer Rat is now looking for an adoptive family near DHS to help him continue his treatment and eventually undergo neutering. While some might overlook his quirky looks, his caregivers believe he's a unique gem deserving of love.

Embracing the Unconventional

"We know Sewer Rat isn’t everyone’s ideal cat—he's patchy, has fungal issues, and carries that 'I just woke up in a ditch' vibe," DHS wrote. "But beyond that, he’s healing, sweet, playful, and well on his way to recovery."

The Perfect Match

According to Feightner, the ideal family for Sewer Rat would be open-minded, willing to handle a little fungus, and ideally have a spare room for his isolation during treatment. While finding this perfect match may seem challenging, they remain hopeful that his forever family will appear soon.

Raising Awareness for All Animals in Need

In the meantime, DHS continues to share Sewer Rat's journey, hoping to raise awareness for other medically complex pets who equally deserve second chances. "While Sewer Rat's crusty charm has drawn much attention, we aim to highlight that all pets with medical needs are still deserving of whatever love they can get," Feightner concluded.
