Building a Global Brand from Singapore

Ryan Foo, co-founder of DrinkAid, has set his sights on creating a brand that resonates on an international scale, one that Singaporeans can genuinely take pride in. "I want to build a brand with international appeal, something Singaporeans can feel proud to call their own," says Foo.

A Journey of Passion and Purpose

After a revealing internship that made him rethink a career in law, Ryan Foo embraced his passion for alcohol wellness. He, along with a close schoolmate from Singapore Management University and a certified nutritionist, identified a dire need for solutions to the infamous ‘Asian flush’—a condition causing facial redness after drinking alcohol.

In early 2020, they launched DrinkAid, embarking on a journey filled with trials and collaborations with experts in nutrition, science, and pharmacology. Their hard work culminated in a unique formula designed to aid the body’s alcohol detoxification, which was validated through clinical testing.

From Concept to Launch

Their innovation didn't go unnoticed; they gained acceptance into the Business Innovations Generator, a funding program from their university. Following months of perseverance, DrinkAid officially debuted in August 2020. Since then, the brand has sold over 600,000 doses, catering to health-conscious consumers both in Singapore and beyond by helping them efficiently process acetaldehyde, the notorious by-product of alcohol.

Redefining Success and Challenges

Leaving behind a predictable legal career path, Foo took a significant risk by choosing to bootstrap DrinkAid straight out of university. "That experience taught me that conviction isn’t about bravado; it’s about making thoughtful 'small bets' and quickly adapting to reduce real-time risks," he explains.

His understanding of success has evolved over time, shifting away from traditional notions of job security and stability. "True success isn’t defined by titles or societal expectations. It’s about waking up without wishing to escape your own life," says Foo.

Embracing Uncertainty and Failure

As an entrepreneur, Ryan learned to navigate the unpredictable nature of business. He recognizes that even the best planning can't foresee every challenge. Instead of fearing failure, he has embraced it as a valuable teacher.

Finding Balance in Ambition

To maintain balance, Foo likens ambition and well-being to complementary muscles, each needing rest to grow. He pushes forward for the business, but knows when to pull back—especially if he feels overwhelmed or disconnected from important relationships.

The Power of Collective Talent

Foo challenges the notion that hard work alone leads to success. His experiences have shown him the value of diverse perspectives and teamwork. "Real breakthroughs occur when individuals can safely challenge each other’s ideas," he adds.

A Glimpse into the Future

As DrinkAid continues to thrive, Ryan Foo’s commitment to creating a world-class brand reflects a belief in the capabilities of Singaporeans. His journey highlights the essence of entrepreneurship: passion, resilience, and a vision for a brighter future.
