In a shocking discovery at the Woodlands Checkpoint this August, authorities seized a substantial haul of illegal items hidden in the trunk of a rental car, sending waves of concern through Singapore's strict regulatory environment.

Routine Check Reveals Hidden Dangers

On August 29, during a regular screening, auxiliary police officers stumbled upon an alarming stash: 34 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes and 18 e-vaporisers, alongside various related accessories. This shocking find has reignited discussions about the ongoing battle against illicit vaping and tobacco products in Singapore.

Heightened Enforcement and New Penalties

In light of rising vaping incidents, Singapore is dramatically ramping up its enforcement strategies. The Singapore Customs and Health Sciences Authority (HSA) are now investigating this case, shedding light on the broader issue of illegal vape trafficking.

From January 2024 to March 2025, it’s estimated that HSA will seize an astounding $41 million worth of vaping products, illustrating a nearly fivefold increase compared to the previous years. Just between April and June, authorities detected 19 significant vape smuggling operations, resulting in the confiscation of around 90,000 vapes and their components.

Tougher Laws for Vaping Offenders

Starting September 1, new, stricter penalties for vaping violations will take effect. Individuals caught with vapes could now face hefty fines – $500 for those under 18 and $700 for adults, raising the stakes from previous fines of $300 and $500. Additionally, repeat offenders may be required to undergo rehabilitation.

Even more concerning, penalties for vape products laced with synthetic drugs, commonly referred to as Kpods, will be significantly intensified under the Misuse of Drugs Act, posing even harsher consequences for sellers and users.
