A Major Sweep by Singapore's LTA

In a significant enforcement blitz, Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced on July 11 that they had detected a staggering 232 mobility-related offences and impounded 151 non-compliant devices in just the last two months. This clampdown showcases the authorities' heightened vigilance in maintaining road safety.

Targeting Group Gatherings

The LTA's operations were not random; they were strategically timed to coincide with the June school holidays, a period notorious for increased e-bike usage among youths. By collaborating with local police from Marina Bay, Punggol, and Geylang, the authorities aimed at large gatherings of riders, effectively shutting down potential hotspots for illegal riding.

Types of Offences

Among the offences uncovered were the use of power-assisted bicycles, commonly known as e-bikes, that either lacked proper registration plates or had been illegally modified. Additionally, bicycles that didn’t have functioning handbrakes were also flagged as serious violations, raising crucial safety concerns.

Stiff Penalties Await Offenders

The repercussions for offenders are not light. First-time violators found with improper or obscured e-bike number plates could face fines reaching up to $1,000, alongside possible jail time of up to three months. Furthermore, those caught employing non-compliant devices in public spaces may be slapped with fines that can soar to $10,000, six months in jail, or both!
