A Day for Democracy: GE2025 Polling Day Declared Holiday

Get ready, Singapore! May 3 marks a significant day as Singaporeans head to the polls for the upcoming General Election. In a recent announcement, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has officially declared this important date as a public holiday.

What This Means for Workers

With this declaration, all employees covered under the Employment Act are entitled to enjoy a paid day off. If May 3 falls on your usual workday, it’s important to know your rights – whether you're eligible for an alternative day off or compensation if you typically don’t work on that day.

Employers are encouraged to discuss arrangements with their employees, ensuring clarity around time off or salary in lieu. And remember, simply defaulting to the next Monday, May 5, is not an option!

Extra Pay for Those Who Work!

For those required to work on Polling Day, there’s good news. Employees will receive an extra day’s salary for their work on this public holiday, or they could opt for an alternative day off. Employers also have the flexibility to provide time off in lieu for workers laboring on this significant occasion.

Who Is Covered?

The following groups of employees are included in these provisions: manual laborers earning above $4,500 a month, non-manual workers making over $2,600, and all managers and executives.

Stay Informed!

For further details about your rights on this upcoming public holiday, companies and workers can check the MOM’s website. So, let’s gear up for a day that not only represents our democratic rights but also ensures a well-deserved break for everyone. Don’t miss out!
