Breaking News: New Drug Law in Action
In a shocking turn of events, a 40-year-old man has been charged with possession of etomidate, a substance recently classified as an illegal drug, just days following the enhancement of the law.
Caught Red-Handed
Derek Khor Boon Chun was apprehended on September 6 at a parking lot in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4, found in possession of 43 e-vaporiser pods filled with etomidate.
A New Era of Drug Regulation
On September 8, Khor faced charges under the Misuse of Drugs Act (MDA) for possession intended for trafficking. He has since been remanded at the Central Police Division, with his case scheduled for another mention on September 15.
Stiff Penalties on the Horizon
If convicted, Khor may face severe penalties ranging from two to ten years in prison and between two to five strokes of the cane, reflecting the government's tough stance on drug-related offences.
The Timing is Crucial
This incident comes just a week after Health Minister Ong Ye Kung’s announcement that etomidate has been classified as a Class C drug under the MDA. Before September 1, it was regulated under the Poisons Act, where possession could lead to a maximum of two years in jail and fines up to $10,000.
Understanding Class C Drugs
Class C drugs, including etomidate, are acknowledged to have lower harm potential than Class A and B substances, yet they still require strict control due to their dangers. Other drugs under this classification include the hypnotic drug Erimin-5 (nimetazepam).
A Call to Action
Authorities are urging the public to report any vaping-related offences through the Health Sciences Authority hotline or online reporting channels, emphasizing community vigilance in combating drug abuse.
