2024-09-23

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s King, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, has declared his recent four-day state visit to Beijing a resounding success, emphasizing its significance in enhancing bilateral relations between Malaysia and China.

Upon returning from his trip, which concluded on September 22, Sultan Ibrahim expressed satisfaction with the discussions held with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. The Malaysian monarch expressed admiration for China's rapid development on the global stage over the past two decades, pointing out how the nation provides valuable lessons for Malaysia as it strives for recovery after recent trials.

Historic Visit and Diplomatic Milestone

This visit marks the first by a Malaysian King to China in a decade, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations. Sultan Ibrahim highlighted that the anniversary is not just a milestone but a crucial opportunity to bolster cooperation towards a brighter future.

"The strong ties between Malaysia and China are founded on mutual trust and respect, paving the way for collaboration across various sectors," he stated. He urged the Malaysian government to capitalize on the outcomes of this visit, advocating for progress in education, trade, investment, transport, and connectivity.

Solidarity and Cooperation

In a notable diplomatic stance, Sultan Ibrahim expressed solidarity with China regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza, aligning Malaysia's position with that of China to promote peace in Palestine. Additionally, he reiterated Malaysia's commitment to safeguarding peace in the contested South China Sea, an area where territorial claims overlap among several Southeast Asian nations.

Belt and Road Initiative

During discussions, President Xi reaffirmed China’s intention to enhance connectivity with Malaysia as part of the ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which aims to create extensive trade networks. Key projects discussed included the construction of a railway on Malaysia's eastern coast and the establishment of industrial parks in Qinhzou, China, and Kuantan, Malaysia. Xi also proposed increased cooperation in agriculture, new energy, poverty reduction, and technology development, promising to enhance collaboration in higher education and scientific research.

Emotional Moments and Community Engagement

An emotional moment during the visit occurred when Sultan Ibrahim spoke candidly about his late son, Tengku Abdul Jalil Iskandar Ibrahim. He thanked China for its support during his son’s liver transplant in 2014. The poignant remarks reportedly moved both President Xi and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

While in Beijing, the King also engaged with the Malaysian diaspora, gathering around 300 Malaysians, accompanied by his son, Tengku Temenggong Idris Iskandar Sultan Ibrahim, and Malaysia's Transport Minister, Anthony Loke.

Looking Forward

Reflecting on past connections, it’s notable that former King Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah made a similar visit to China in 2014, celebrating 40 years of Malaysia-China relations. As both nations move forward, the potential for expanded ties appears brighter than ever, paving the way for a collaborative and prosperous future.
