Political Landscape Shifts as Respected MPs Step Aside

In a surprising move, Singapore’s political scene is poised for change as Members of Parliament Amy Khor and Don Wee announce they won’t be running in the upcoming General Election. Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong made this revelation during the candidate introduction event for Chua Chu Kang GRC and Bukit Gombak SMC.

A Legacy of Service from Amy Khor

Dr. Amy Khor, a prominent figure in Singaporean politics, has served her community diligently since 2001 when she first entered the political arena with the People's Action Party (PAP). After winning the Hong Kah North Single Member Constituency (SMC) in 2011, Dr. Khor has become a cherished part of the community's fabric.

Despite her significant contributions, Dr. Khor has decided to step down for personal reasons. Reflecting on her journey, she expressed gratitude towards the residents, grassroots leaders, and volunteers who supported her throughout her 24-year career. "I look forward to the next chapter where I will continue to serve and contribute to the community in new ways," she stated.

Don Wee Bids Farewell After His Debut

Joining the political fray just in 2020, Don Wee made a name for himself as part of the Chua Chu Kang team. As he prepares to exit, he took to social media to share his appreciation for the opportunity to serve. "Being your MP has been one of the greatest honors of my life. I leave with gratitude for the friendships forged and the lives touched," Mr. Wee conveyed.

Future of Constituencies: Changes Ahead

The electoral landscape is also undergoing a transformation with Hong Kah North SMC being dissolved. This comes as a result of recent boundary changes, merging its districts into Chua Chu Kang GRC and the newly established Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC.

The Electoral Boundaries Review Committee has noted that as Singapore continues to grow, especially with new housing developments in areas like Tengah and Bukit Batok West, these boundaries will shift accordingly.

The Road Ahead: New Faces and Team Dynamics

As the PAP gears up for GE2025, DPM Gan will lead the charge in Chua Chu Kang, supported by incumbent MP Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim and fresh faces like former senior civil servant Jeffrey Siow and Assistant Professor Choo Pei Ling. Meanwhile, Ms. Low Yen Ling will shift her focus to contend for the new Bukit Gombak SMC.

The upcoming election promises to be a pivotal moment for Singapore, as it not only ushers in new leadership but also highlights a necessary renewal within the ranks of the PAP.
