SINGAPORE – Community Improvements and the Ambitious Masterplan

Over the past five years, Ang Mo Kio has harvested a trove of community improvements, from upgraded markets to innovative 'Silver Zones' designed to enhance safety for seniors.

Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong emphasized that the journey of progress is far from over. Speaking at the recent launch of the Ang Mo Kio town council masterplan on March 15, he made a heartfelt call for continued support from residents and the initiative of the town’s councillors.

A Nurturing Environment for All Generations

The ambitious masterplan aims to create a nurturing environment for both the young and the elderly, empowering communities throughout Ang Mo Kio’s seven subdivisions: Ang Mo Kio-Hougang, Cheng San-Seletar, Fernvale, Jalan Kayu, Teck Ghee, Kebun Baru, and Yio Chu Kang.

Exciting developments are on the horizon, including upgraded community clubs in Cheng San-Seletar and Yio Chu Kang, which are currently undergoing renovations. New playgrounds and communal spaces will cater to the needs of residents in Lentor Estate and Cactus Sunrise.

Enhancing Accessibility and Active Ageing

In a bid to enhance accessibility, the town plans to introduce additional sheltered walkways, senior-friendly amenities, and initiatives. A key highlight is the upcoming Silver Upgrading Programme set to launch in four precincts in Chong Boon, adding features like therapeutic gardens, fitness trails, and barrier-free access points, all tailored for Active Ageing.

Connecting the Community with Nature and Transport

Bicycle enthusiasts and walkers will also enjoy new walking and cycling trails connecting the town’s gardens with Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park through a planned 'Garden Loop.' The completion of significant transport projects such as the North-South Corridor and the Cross Island Line promises to further streamline commutes, while the introduction of new trains and an expanded LRT depot will alleviate wait times on the Sengkang-Punggol line.

A Vision for a Vibrant Community

'This is our vision for Ang Mo Kio – a vibrant, healthy, and happy place to live. We have set concrete plans to ensure we realize this vision,' declared SM Lee, who also serves as the Member of Parliament representing Ang Mo Kio GRC, during the launch event at Ang Mo Kio Central Stage.

He urged the community to partner with the local government in enhancing Ang Mo Kio, fostering a sense of pride among residents.

New Transport Solutions and Amenities

Additionally, SM Lee launched bus service 138M, a new route designed to facilitate easier access for residents traveling to Ang Mo Kio Polyclinic from the bus interchange, particularly benefiting the elderly and those with mobility challenges.

Reflecting on Recent Developments

Recalling the significant improvements of recent years, SM Lee highlighted developments like the Fernvale Community Centre and the Fernvale Hawker Centre and Market, unveiled in 2022. Overhauls of various shopping venues, including those in Cheng San, Chong Boon, Teck Ghee, Kebun Bahru, and Mayflower, have rejuvenated community life, while a new water playground has been added for families at Buangkok Square Park.

Enhancements for Navigating Daily Life

Distinctive enhancements, such as the vibrantly painted housing blocks in Yio Chu Kang, have been introduced to help residents with dementia navigate their surroundings more easily, supported by 'Friendly Streets' equipped with barrier-free crossings throughout the area.

Community Feedback and Engagement

As for feedback from residents, many shared their enthusiasm for ongoing improvements. Local resident Ms. Wendy Wong expressed her satisfaction with transport advancements and the green initiatives taking shape. She remarked on Ang Mo Kio's diverse food options and accessibility, noting her sense of unity with the community.

Conversely, Ms. Yogeswari Nagaraja, a resident near Mayflower MRT station, voiced a desire for more community engagement activities targeted toward seniors, to encourage social connections within the greying demographic.

Looking Ahead to Political Developments

Looking ahead to potential political contestations, Mr. Darryl David, chairman of Ang Mo Kio Town Council, noted the changes resulting from the recent Electoral Boundaries Review Committee report which carved out Jalan Kayu as a new Single Member Constituency (SMC). Multiple opposition entities have expressed intentions to vie for the new SMC seat.

An Optimistic Future for Ang Mo Kio

As Ang Mo Kio transitions and evolves, the local government remains optimistic, hoping that the community will appreciate the dedicated improvements implemented during their time as part of the larger Ang Mo Kio family. 'We hope for the best,' Mr. David concluded on a hopeful note, signaling a promising future for the residents.
