SINGAPORE: In a significant operation carried out by the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) on Tuesday, September 17, five men aged between 19 and 39 were apprehended for suspected drug trafficking. This crackdown signals a strong message from law enforcement amidst the ongoing fight against drug abuse in the nation.

The operation yielded a staggering haul of drugs, with an estimated street value of S$333,000 (approximately USD 245,000). Among the seized items, about 6.5kg of cannabis was recovered, alongside an alarming collection of other controlled substances.

During the operation, a 26-year-old suspect was first arrested in the carpark of a residential estate near Anchorvale Lane, where officers discovered around 32g of Ice, a form of crystal methamphetamine. This initial arrest led to simultaneous raids on a unit in the same estate, resulting in the capture of four additional suspects.

Authorities managed to confiscate an extensive array of drugs, including 6.15kg of cannabis, 777g of Ice, 281g of ecstasy, 693 LSD stamps, and 1,378 Erimin-5 tablets. To further compound matters, one of the arrested individuals, a 39-year-old man, was escorted to his car during the operation. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered even more illegal substances: about 375g of cannabis, 129g of Ice, 11g of ecstasy, and 51 Erimin-5 tablets.

Despite the gravity of the situation, authorities discovered three young children—aged 11, 13, and 15—inside the unit at the time of the raid. In an effort to ensure their safety and welfare, the CNB made "appropriate arrangements," placing the children in the care of their next-of-kin, highlighting the bureau's commitment to public safety beyond just combating drug trafficking.

Following the initial arrests, CNB officers expanded their investigation to the official residences of the suspects. At one individual's home, located near Tampines North Drive 1, law enforcement discovered an additional stash comprising about 19g of Ice, two LSD stamps, and five Erimin-5 tablets.

As investigations continue into the ongoing drug activities of these men, the CNB has emphasized the severe legal ramifications associated with drug trafficking. Those convicted of trafficking more than 250g of methamphetamine or over 500g of cannabis could face the mandatory death penalty—a chilling reminder of Singapore's tough stance on drug-related crimes.

In a haunting statistic, the CNB stated that the drugs seized during this operation could have satisfied the addiction of approximately 1,480 users for a full week, spotlighting the urgent need for continued vigilance in tackling drug trafficking and abuse in the region.
