Major Disruption on East-West Line: Power Supply Repairs Expected by September 27

SINGAPORE – The East-West Line (EWL) has been facing significant disruptions following a mishap involving a faulty train that occurred on September 25. Rail operator SMRT has announced that power supply to the affected section will be restored by the end of September 27.

The incident, which took place as a defective train was being returned to the Ulu Pandan Depot, resulted in a power trip and caused extensive damage to both the tracks and trackside equipment near Clementi and Dover stations. Engineers identified 34 rail breaks along a 1.6km stretch of the westbound track, rendering it unsafe for train operations.

In response to the damage, multiple components, including power cables and two point machines—critical devices that guide trains onto different tracks—were replaced. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) reported that despite the challenges, progress was made as favorable weather allowed repair teams to work efficiently. A video posted on their social media showcased the ongoing repairs with staff working diligently to replace damaged elements.

Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat visited the Ulu Pandan Depot on September 26, revealing that over 30 heavy rail segments have been replaced as part of the repair efforts. The task involved utilizing mechanical jigs to reposition new rail segments due to the broken rails, as engineering vehicles were not feasible for this operation.

As of September 27, shuttle trains are operating every 10 minutes between Boon Lay and Jurong East, and between Queenstown and Buona Vista stations, providing some relief to the affected passengers. However, a gap in service persists between Jurong East and Buona Vista, affecting nearly one million passengers over the last few days.

To accommodate commuters, free bridging bus services have been introduced along the disrupted route, with additional regular bus services running between Boon Lay and Queenstown stations.

SMRT is working diligently to restore normal services by September 30, and passengers are advised to consider alternative routes using the North-South Line, Thomson-East Coast Line, and Downtown Line to reach the city center during this disruption.
