In a troubling incident that raises serious food safety concerns, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has launched an investigation into reports of birds scavenging on uncovered fruits at a market stall located in Bukit Panjang. This alarming situation was highlighted by a Stomp contributor, who shared disturbing photos and videos of the scene at Block 257 Bangkit Road on September 17.

Despite notifying authorities about the issue as early as June, the contributor, known only as W, claims that the situation remains unchanged. He described the sight of birds pecking at the "dirty and filthy" fruits as a daily occurrence. W expressed his worry about the health risks involved, particularly for vulnerable consumers like the elderly, who might have poor eyesight and could unknowingly purchase contaminated produce.

In a defense of his practices, the stall owner, Mr. Hong, asserted that the fruits left uncovered are intentionally "ugly," meaning they have minor defects. These include apples, bananas, and guavas, all sold at a low price of $1 per basket, containing anywhere from three to six pieces. He emphasized that these fruits are not meant for direct consumption; instead, customers often take them to use as fertilizer or to feed birds.

“We replace these fruits daily," Mr. Hong stated in an interview with Shin Min Daily News, "and any that show signs of spoilage or have been pecked by birds are immediately discarded, ensuring that only fresh produce reaches our consumers.”

The Singapore Food Agency responded to the incident, reiterating that food safety is a collective responsibility. They emphasized that not only do they enforce regulatory measures, but food vendors must also follow strict hygiene and safety protocols. The agency noted: “SFA takes a serious view towards food safety and will investigate all feedback alleging poor food safety practices.”
