Starting January 13 to February 21, 2025, anyone wishing to explore the National University of Singapore (NUS) campus must register and book a group tour slot. This popular university is implementing these new measures to manage an overwhelming influx of tourists, especially during peak periods.

According to an NUS spokesperson, visitors who arrive unaccompanied by a student ambassador or docent will be politely asked to leave the campus. This decision arises from recent reports of chaotic scenes within the university, including large crowds occupying seats intended for students, littering, and causing long waits for amenities. The influx has notably strained campus shuttle services and overburdened local eateries.

Organized Tours for a Better Experience

To facilitate organized visits, NUS announced on December 22 that licensed travel agents and tourist guides can arrange group tours with an NUS student ambassador or engage registered student docents for guiding. Even general visitors must book their spots accordingly.

In another effort to streamline visitor access, tour groups will also have to provide details of their bus license plates prior to their visit—a move that adds an extra layer of organization to the registration process.

Access Limitations During Busy Periods

In terms of campus access during this busy season, the internal shuttle service will exclusively serve NUS students, staff, and authorized personnel from Monday to Friday, between 8 AM and 2 PM. Additionally, access to food courts in University Town will be limited to these same groups from 11 AM to 2 PM on weekdays.

It's important to note that campus visits will be entirely closed to the public on specific dates in 2025 due to major events involving high student participation, including February 5 and multiple dates in August.

Over the summer of 2024, concerns over tourist congestion led the National University of Singapore Students' Union to request a town hall meeting with university officials to address the challenges faced by students. In response, NUS published a circular outlining visitor management strategies, including the introduction of limited daily slots for tour buses, anticipating another tourist peak in the upcoming months.

With expectations of continued high visitor numbers from January to February and again between July and August, registered student guides will need to formally register with the Office of the Provost. Each registered docent must also reserve their tour slots in advance due to limited daily availability.

In a stern reminder, NUS has stated that unlicensed tour guides found operating within the campus will be reported to the authorities. Moreover, student tour conductors who fail to reserve their tours risk disciplinary actions.
