Liverpool Targets Alexander Isak Amid Newcastle's Bid
Liverpool is making significant moves to secure the signing of striker Alexander Isak, coinciding with Newcastle's 'official bid' for Hugo Ekitike, who could potentially fill Isak's shoes at St. James’ Park.
Newcastle recently kick-started their transfer activity by acquiring Anthony Elanga for £55 million from Nottingham Forest. However, the Magpies were left reeling after Joao Pedro chose Chelsea, prompting them to reignite their interest in Ekitike after previous failed attempts last year.
Ekitike's Transfer Drama
Ekitike, who scored an impressive 22 goals and provided 12 assists last season, was initially snubbed by Newcastle in favor of PSG in January 2022, and later joined Frankfurt for only £14.3 million. Now, with a €100 million (£86 million) release clause in place, Newcastle has officially reached out to Eintracht Frankfurt, motivated by the recent signing of Jonathan Burkardt.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano confirmed via Twitter: "EXCL: Newcastle submitted an official bid today to Eintracht Frankfurt for Hugo Ekitike! Proposal higher than €70 million previously offered, with negotiations already in motion."
What This Means for Isak and Liverpool
While Newcastle pushes for Ekitike, it remains uncertain how this will affect Liverpool's pursuit of Isak. Sources suggest Newcastle is keen on retaining Isak, planning to offer him a new contract later this summer, as he is under contract for three more years.
Yet, top transfer expert Nicolo Schira maintained that Isak has been Liverpool's 'main target' since March. He noted on social media, "#Liverpool is still working on this transfer deal, even if #Newcastle has so far remained uninterested in offers."
Liverpool's Transfer Ambitions Continue
With the competitive landscape heating up, all eyes are on Liverpool as they navigate through their summer transfer ambitions. As the drama unfolds around Isak and Ekitike, fans eagerly anticipate how these developments will shape the upcoming season.
