A New Era for JPL Begins
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), renowned for its groundbreaking planetary exploration, is poised for a significant leadership change as Laurie Leshin announces her departure as director, effective June.
Leshin, who has guided JPL for over three years, will hand over the reins to David Gallagher, the current associate director for strategic integration. This transition marks the end of an era filled with remarkable achievements.
Reflecting on Achievements
In a heartfelt email to JPL employees, Leshin expressed her pride in the lab’s numerous successes during her tenure. "From launching missions like EMIT, SWOT, Psyche, and Europa Clipper to overseeing the upcoming NISAR launch, it’s been a remarkable journey," she stated.
Under her leadership, JPL not only advanced numerous missions but also made groundbreaking discoveries, such as the potential ancient Martian biomarkers identified by the Perseverance rover.
Personal Reasons for Departure
Leshin cited personal reasons for her decision to step down, citing the need to refocus on her research at Caltech and support her family, still recovering from the impacts of the Eaton fire. "This event continues to affect my daily life, as I know it does for many of you," she remarked.
Introducing David Gallagher
David Gallagher, stepping into the director role, is no stranger to JPL, having dedicated 36 years to the lab in various significant positions, including deputy director for Astronomy, Physics, and Space Technology.
"Laurie has made a profound impact on energizing and guiding JPL through the challenges of the pandemic, and I’m honored to succeed her," Gallagher stated.
A Fond Farewell
Leshin concluded her message by praising Gallagher as "the right leader at the right time for the Lab," emphasizing her deep appreciation for the time spent leading JPL. "Leading JPL has been the honor of a lifetime," she said, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and exploration.
As JPL gears up for its next chapter under Gallagher’s leadership, the world anticipates even greater advancements in space exploration.
