In a surprising turn of events, Singapore's Labour chief, Ng Chee Meng, announced on Friday that he will not pursue further action against a Facebook user, Rich Sng, following controversial comments regarding a photo featuring Ng with a convicted money launderer.
The decision came after Sng, whose full name is Sng Chia Huat, deleted multiple posts and issued a public apology to Ng, as well as to Health Minister Ong Ye Kung and Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat.
In his statement, Ng confirmed, "Mr. Sng has acknowledged that his allegations were baseless, false, and completely unfounded. He has also committed to refrain from making any similar claims in the future." Ng expressed his intention to move forward and put the matter to rest.
Meanwhile, Ministers Ong and Chee emphasized the challenges faced by public officials in navigating their associations with individuals who may not have a clean record. They stated, "While it’s essential for citizens to voice dissent regarding government policies, that should not involve making unfounded accusations that tarnish the reputations of those in public service."
Sng's public apology included his offer to perform 300 hours of community service instead of paying damages, citing his financial difficulties after closing his business this year. However, the ministers' response did not comment on this offer, leaving the future of Sng’s community service proposal uncertain.
