Eviction Controversy Surrounds KL Tower
KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 — The battle over KL Tower escalated as Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil fervently supported the eviction of its previous operator, Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd (MKLSB), after they disregarded the handover deadline.
According to Fahmi, the iconic tower is wholly owned by the government, and management officially transitioned to LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd (LSHSM) on April 1, now operating under the oversight of the Communications Ministry.
Legal Steps to Ensure Compliance
"Despite this formal change, the former operator has failed to vacate the premises," Fahmi revealed during a weekly briefing. He noted that a legal action, referencing Section 425 of the National Land Code, has been initiated to enable the Federal Land Commissioner to intervene and grant access to the new management.
Urgent Repairs Needed for Visitor Safety
Fahmi highlighted the pressing need for maintenance at the KL Tower, stating it currently stands in disrepair. "We have substantial video and photographic evidence indicating serious issues with the equipment, kitchen, and the revolving restaurant," he stated, describing them as unsuitable for public visitation.
He added, "Concerns are especially high due to exposed railings on the lower decks, which pose significant safety risks. We are pushing the new management to prioritize repairs and maintenance with a focus on visitor safety."
Staffing Updates Amid Transition
On the employment front, the minister confirmed that LSHSM has agreed to retain former MKLSB employees, ensuring that their terms are no less favorable than prior agreements. So far, 193 employees have transitioned to the new management.
As the saga continues, an official announcement detailing the necessary maintenance period will follow as further information from the new management becomes available. The urgency for action at KL Tower has never been more critical to secure the safety and comfort of its future visitors.
